# A $3 Trillion Selloff Sweeps Wall Street as AI Data Center Fears Hit Chip Stocks

> U.S. markets gave up a historic one-day post-midterm rally within 24 hours, with the Nasdaq dropping roughly 5% and chip stocks leading losses amid concern that newly elected Democratic governors will slow data center buildouts in key U.S. states.

U.S. markets turned sharply lower on Thursday, erasing a strong post-midterm rally in a single session and wiping out roughly $3 trillion in equity value by early afternoon. The Nasdaq Composite fell about 5%, the S&P 500 dropped nearly 4%, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down roughly 2.9%, or more than 1,500 points. The reversal came just one day after Wall Street had celebrated the election outcome with its best post-midterm rally in 44 years.

## Chip and AI stocks led the decline

The selling was concentrated in technology and artificial intelligence names. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index slid about 9.75% in intraday trading and at one point was down 11%, heading for its worst single-day decline since March 2020. AMD and Micron each lost roughly 15%, Nvidia fell almost 9%, Qualcomm dropped 11.2%, and Arm Holdings slipped 11%. Tesla, another heavily traded growth name, declined as much as 10%.

## Data center politics replace rate politics

Much of the selling appeared tied to ballot measures and governor races that could slow the buildout of AI data centers across the United States. Voters approved 41 measures aimed at restricting data center development, with Ohio standing out as a focal point. Shares of Vistra, a power producer tied to data center demand, plunged 14%, while cooling and power infrastructure supplier Vertiv fell 13%.

In Texas, Democrat Gina Hinojosa defeated Republican Governor Greg Abbott after campaigning on an immediate moratorium on new data centers. That matters because Wells Fargo estimates 27% of planned U.S. data center gigawatts are slated for Texas. Abbott had already paused new data center permits in September for a grid audit, so Hinojosa could extend an existing freeze without passing new legislation. Similar campaigns in Ohio and Georgia, where Amy Acton and Keisha Lance Bottoms also ran on restricting data center development, added to the sense that the political environment for AI infrastructure has shifted.

## Asia sold off first

The warning signs appeared overnight in Asia. South Korea's Kospi closed down 5.28% after trading halts during the session, Taiwan's main index fell 3.2%, and Japan's Nikkei 225 lost 1.79%. The regional losses reflected how exposed Asian semiconductor and technology supply chains are to U.S. AI demand, and how quickly sentiment can reverse when investors question whether the infrastructure spending behind the AI boom can keep accelerating.

## Not every sector joined the rout

Despite the broad losses, four of the S&P 500's 11 sectors rose on the day. Consumer staples gained 1.5%, and Berkshire Hathaway reached an all-time high. That rotation suggests the selling was driven by a repricing of AI and technology risk rather than a wholesale loss of confidence in corporate America.

## What it means for Southeast Asia

For Southeast Asia, the U.S. selloff is a reminder that the global AI infrastructure buildout is politically fragile. The region has been positioning itself as an alternative location for data center investment, with markets such as Malaysia, Singapore, and Indonesia attracting major commitments. If U.S. states begin restricting development, some of that capital could shift toward Southeast Asia. But the same session also showed that Asian chip and technology markets are not insulated from U.S. sentiment, so any slowdown in American AI spending would quickly transmit across the region.
