# AI Agents Are Now Making Millions of Tiny Payments on Their Own, Chainalysis Data Shows

> Blockchain analytics firm Chainalysis finds that autonomous AI agents conducted 138 million payments on the Coinbase-incubated Base network by the third quarter of 2026, up from roughly 1,500 a year earlier, with most purchases costing less than a dime and happening within minutes of a bot receiving funds.

Autonomous AI agents went from a novelty to a measurable slice of payments activity on the Base blockchain in just over a year, according to new research from blockchain analytics firm Chainalysis. The network, incubated by Coinbase, recorded 138 million agent-initiated transactions by the third quarter of 2026, a jump from roughly 1,500 such transactions in mid-2025, when the idea of software agents paying for things on their own was still mostly theoretical.

## Small payments, fast habits

The scale of the growth is matched by how small and how fast these transactions have become. Chainalysis found that 87% of agent payments were for less than 10 cents, the kind of micropayment that would be uneconomical to process through traditional card rails but is cheap enough on a blockchain for a bot to make thousands of times over. Adoption has also sped up dramatically: the median time between an agent's wallet receiving its first deposit and making its first payment fell from 73 days in late 2025 to just 18 minutes by the third quarter of 2026, with roughly two-thirds of newly funded wallets spending within an hour of receiving money.

## From one-off test to repeat behavior

Perhaps the clearest sign that this is becoming routine rather than experimental: 90% of active, qualifying agent wallets received repeat deposits within 30 days, up from 71% a year earlier. That shift from one-time top-ups to recurring funding suggests operators are treating agent wallets less like a pilot project and more like a standing operational budget line, refilled on a regular cadence the way a company might fund a corporate card.

## The plumbing behind the boom

Much of this activity runs through x402, a payments protocol for AI agents that launched in May 2025 and was handed over to the Linux Foundation in July 2026 to be governed as open infrastructure rather than a single company's product. Its member list now includes Visa, Mastercard, Stripe, Google, and Cloudflare, a roster that signals mainstream payments and infrastructure companies are positioning themselves early for a world where software, not just people, initiates transactions. Agent wallets are typically funded in USDC, the dollar-pegged stablecoin issued by Circle, giving bots a stable unit of account to transact in without exposure to crypto price swings.

## What the bots are actually buying

The purchases themselves are mundane by design: computing power, access to live web data, coding tools, online shopping and travel bookings, calls to other, more capable AI models, and automated security checks on software. None of it is glamorous, but it is exactly the kind of recurring, low-friction spending that stablecoin rails and micropayment-friendly blockchains were built to handle, and that traditional card networks have historically struggled to price profitably.

## Why it matters beyond crypto circles

For an audience watching where capital and infrastructure investment are heading next, the Chainalysis numbers point to a quieter but potentially larger story than any single AI model release: a payments layer built specifically for machines to transact with each other, with major financial and technology incumbents already signed up to help govern it. Whether that layer stays a niche rail for bot errands or becomes a meaningful channel of economic activity in its own right will depend on how far agentic AI spreads beyond the compute, data, and software purchases it is mostly making today.
